How To Buy A Diamond Online

Mar 3, 2017

"Buying Online? Here are the important things to consider.

Let’s start with the major part of your investment-a loose diamond. It is important to protect your investment so I suggest you buy from a reputable online retailer.

Buy an internationally certified diamond. I recommend GIA (Gemological Institute of America) or AGS (American Gem Society).  Their certification confirms that the diamond you buy will be exactly as it should be as it has been graded by a leading gem laboratory.

I suggest you educate yourself concerning the 4 C’s: colour, clarity, cut and carat.  Have a look at The Diamond Shops 4Cs of Diamonds

The round brilliant diamond is the most popular cut so let’s use this as an example. Its perfect round shape and its cut produces the most sparkle and life of all the diamonds.

For colour I recommend a white diamond for excellent value and suggest the colour range of F to I .

For clarity I recommend SI2 to VS2 for the best value ( I avoid black inclusions).

The diamond’s brilliance is dependent on how well it is cut.  For this reason I recommend the cutting grade ‘Triple Excellent’ (costs the most but worth the spend) and urge you not to buy lower than a Very Good cut.

The carat weight is up to you-this is where you decide how big you want the diamond to look.

Other diamond shapes in order of popularity include the princess cut, emerald cut, cushion cut, asscher cut, oval, pear, marquise and heart cuts.

If you want something a little more unique instead of a white diamond, you may consider a fancy coloured diamond.  Popular colours are yellow and pink which come in different depths of colour-the deeper the colour the more the cost.  Fancy yellow diamonds are closer in price to white diamonds however a pink diamond is very expensive due to its rarity.

Once you have chosen your diamond, selecting your ring is the next step.  Quality jewellers offer an extensive selection of diamonds with ring settings designed to complement them. Reputable online retailers will answer any questions you may have, and their knowledgeable staff will help you select or design your ring.

The Diamond Shop Build your Own Ring online feature enables you to see what the diamond you choose will look like on different ring designs.  You can choose a classic solitaire or enhance the centre diamond with smaller diamonds in the band and also choose the colour of the metal you want.  This is a fun way to stimulate your creative juices and visualise your own personal creation.

The final step is to add the ring to your cart and pay for it.  Your transaction is secure and you can look forward to receiving your ring presented in a beautiful wooden box.

The look in her eyes when she opens the box is something you’ll never forget, enjoy the moment."
